Summer Drink: Agua Fresca de Sandia

Time to share one of my favorite summer drinks, it’s a traditional Mexican drink made with pure fruit, water and a little sugar if needed or desired. The agua fresca means refreshing water and sandia of course means watermelon. Growing up my mom never allowed us kids to have soda, she never bought it. Thank goodness, I now appreciate this effort on her part. Instead she made lemonade or agua frescas for us as a treat, especially in the summer. My favorites were and still are watermelon, melon and strawberry.

In the recent reunion I attended I decide to bring this as one of my contributions to our potluck and thought it was worthy enough to share and spread the love.

1/2 large watermelon cut into medium squared pieces for the blender

1 cup of crushed ice (if too pulpy just add more ice or a bit of water)

1-2 teaspoons of pure cane sugar if desired (some fruits are really sweet and don’t need it)

Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until it’s all crushed and blended. I personally don’t mind it with the pulp, you get more out of it, but you could use a sifter and remove the pulp. Just be prepared to give up lot’s of it. Taste for sweetness, place in a pitcher, garnish with lime or fresh mint. Serves 5-6 glasses, keep refrigerated for a few days only since it’s fresh fruit juice.

Enjoy, sit back and relax.
